Eileen Blair Orwell's wife, Eileen Blair (1905–45), played a significant role in his life, but Orwell does not focus on her in this book. Eileen Blair alerted Orwell when it was time to hide during the Barcelona May Days.
Stafford Cottman Stafford Cottman is an 18-year-old Englishman and POUM militia member; he comes down with what seems to be tuberculosis and is sent to the same hospital as Orwell.
Jorge Jorge Roca (no dates found) is a battalion commander in the POUM militia. He is wounded during the nighttime raid on the fascist position at Huesca.
The little officer The little officer is secretary to a colonel in the War Department in Barcelona. When Orwell turns to him for help getting his friend Georges Kopp released, the little officer treats Orwell decently even though he knows Orwell fought in the POUM militia.
Andrés Nin Andrés Nin (1892–1937) is a leftist communist and former POUM member who became Minister of Justice in Catalonia.
The PSUC propagandist at Monte Trazo While the Republican and the Nationalist sides are dug in, they trade insults and bits of shouted propaganda. This Republican propagandist from a nearby PSUC position impresses Orwell with his creative taunts to the fascists, including telling them the militiamen were eating buttered toast.
Ramón Ramón is the brother-in-law of Williams, the other Englishman at Alcubierre. Ramón, Williams, and Orwell share a dug-out (a foxhole).
Bob Smillie Bob Smillie (1917–37) is the grandson of a famous labor leader in Britain, and he is in the unit of Englishmen sent to the POUM by the Independent Labour Party, a British political party. Bob Smillie is a talented soldier who dies "an evil and meaningless death" from appendicitis while in prison for being a POUM member.
Williams Williams is the other Englishman in Orwell's unit at Alcubierre.
