Perspective and Narrator

Jacob's Room is an experimental novel that challenges the notion of perspective. Jacob Flanders is the central character, but his story unfolds from the perspectives of the other people in his life. The omniscient narrator jumps from perspective to perspective and views Jacob from many different and occasionally contrasting angles.

Tense

Jacob's Room is written mostly in the past tense. When letters written by the characters form part of the narration, those sections shift to the present tense.

About the Title

The title Jacob's Room refers to the empty space that surrounds Jacob's character. Jacob Flanders is a void at the center of the novel whose identity emerges as a product of his experiences with other people, just as his room is an empty space and the objects within it function like other people's memories of Jacob to reveal his character.
