Dana Dana is an African American woman writer in her 20s who finds she can time travel to Maryland in the antebellum period. Read More
Kevin Kevin, Dana's white husband, is a writer who time travels with Dana. Read More
Rufus Rufus is Dana's ancestor, a white slave owner. Dana repeatedly saves his life. Read More
Alice Alice is Dana's ancestor and the object of Rufus's desire. She becomes his slave and concubine and bears two of his children. Read More
Carrie The one child of Sarah's who is not sold, Carrie is a mute slave who marries and has children with Nigel.
Dana's aunt Dana's aunt accepts her niece's marriage to Kevin because it means the couple's children will be light-skinned.
Isaac Isaac is Alice's husband and a runaway slave who is caught and punished.
Luke Luke is the Weylins' slave and Nigel's father. He tries to assert some control over his life and is later sold.
