What is the significance of the Acropolis's dual symbolism in Lysistrata?
The cult of Athena was the most influential religious organization in Athens. Its high priestess and her all-female staff lived in the Acropolis, which was seen as a symbol of the "ideal Athenian household." However, since the Acropolis housed the treasury used to fund the war, it also represents, at least in Aristophanes's play, the city's financial power. If women already manage the Acropolis's ritual activities on the Athenian polis's behalf, why should they not also manage its financial activities? For Lysistrata, controlling the Acropolis fits perfectly with the logic of her protest.
