In the early 1940s, Eliezer is a pious young Jew whose only interest is God and religion. When the Nazis invade and take him, his family, and the rest of the Jews of Sighet to a concentration camp, he is thrust into a situation he could have never imagined. He quickly comes to realize the evil that man is capable of, and wonders where God is. With his father by his side, Eliezer finds a way to struggle on in the hopes of one day being freed from the camps.
In his town of Sighet, Shlomo is a respected man whom people look to for guidance. Along with the other town elders, he could not believe the Jews of Sighet were in danger, even as their situation worsened. At first, while Shlomo is in the camp with Eliezer, he provides his son with strength and encouragement. However, his health deteriorates, and he needs more help than his son can provide.
