One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest | Part 1, Chapter 12 | Summary

Summary

Bromden is sweeping the ward while the residents meet with a visiting doctor. They ignore him, so he studies a picture brought in by Public Relation that depicts a man fly-fishing in a mountain stream. Suddenly he is inside the picture, sweeping his broom down the mountain path before settling on a rock. He looks through the frame at the doctor and residents, hearing only the sound of the stream behind him.

Analysis

Bromden's heritage and silence keep him relegated to the background, and there are times when he feels himself literally disappearing from view. In this case, he imagines himself in a picture that reminds him of growing up along the Columbia River. He finds comfort in memories of happier times.
