Aech clears the First Gate. I-r0k attempts to blackmail Aech and Parzival into revealing the location of the Copper Key. When they refuse to divulge the location, he tells other gunters Aech and Parzival attend school on Ludus. The next day two more gunters, Daito and Shoto, clear the First Gate. Instead of doing his schoolwork Parzival focuses on attempting to understand the Jade Key riddle.
Parzival is now famous, and he receives fan mail, calls from movie studios and book publishers, and offers for endorsement deals. He accepts some endorsement deals, which allows him to maintain his anonymity while being paid in OASIS credits. Parzival also hears from Nolan Sorrento, the head of operations at Innovative Online Industries and leader of the Sixers. After researching Sorrento, Parzival decides to accept his invitation to meet because he wants to know what sort of recruitment offer IOI will make him: "I felt like I was ready to sit down with the devil."
Just as Aech predicted, I-r0k does his best to sabotage Parzival and Aech by revealing their school's location, which leads to two more gunters clearing the First Gate. With five names on the scoreboard, many people who had given up on the quest in frustration now find their interest renewed: "The secret was out now, and the hunt seemed to be shifting into high gear."
Because of his status as the first gunter on the scoreboard, Wade's avatar, Parzival, begins receiving a lot of attention since there is no known link between his real identity and his avatar. Wade could cash out now with the media offers and rest on his laurels, but he doesn't even consider doing this. He is obsessed with the quest. Because anonymity allows him to keep questing, he accepts endorsement deals on the condition that he remain anonymous. For the first time, he has money. Not only can he escape the stacks, but he can also purchase items within the OASIS that will give him more power on his quest.
Wade decides to meet with Sorrento inside the OASIS to hear the offer IOI will make him. Before the meeting he does extensive research on Sorrento, which shows his careful planning in understanding his opponent. Confident his meeting with Sorrento won't threaten his safety or anonymity, Wade gives in to his curiosity.
