Summary

Over the next 24 hours, more than 60 Sixers clear the First Gate. The gunter clans destroy the force field placed over the tomb's entrance by the Sixers, and then dozens of independent gunters quickly clear the First Gate, too. Wade Watts sees a news story about the explosion in the stacks. There is no investigation, however, because IOI made the explosion look like it was caused by a meth lab. Wade moves to Columbus, Ohio, where GSS and IOI are headquartered. Using access procedures he purchased online, Wade erases his identity from the United States Citizen Registry database and creates a new identity for himself under the name Bryce Lynch. He rents a small apartment in Columbus near the OASIS server vault to access OASIS directly instead of going through IOI, and he makes a vow: "I would abandon the real world altogether until I found the egg."

Analysis

For the first time in his life, Wade can escape the stacks, thanks to the endorsement deals he gained after his success in the quest. However, Wade quickly loses interest in the world outside the stacks: "The view was perpetually bleak, and each decaying, overcrowded city ... looked just like the last." As far as Wade knows, there's nothing compelling or valuable in the world outside the OASIS. To retain his advantage in the game and secure his own safety, Wade transforms himself into Bryce Lynch, which he is able to do only because of the new money and power he has gained through his success in the quest.
