Ready Player One | Level 3, Chapter 0031 | Summary

After copying as much as he can from the Sixer database to his flash drive, Wade erases his debt to IOI from his financial records and disables his tracking anklet and monitoring earpiece. He dresses in a maintenance-tech uniform he's requisitioned and manages to walk out of IOI headquarters without attracting much attention. He checks the post office box he rented before his servitude and finds the OASIS rig he ordered. While in the post office, he quickly logs on to the OASIS and sends messages to Shoto, Aech, and Art3mis to warn them that they are in grave danger. Checking the United States Citizen Registry database, he sees Bryce Lynch has been marked as a wanted fugitive, so he erases his fake profile and reinstates his identity as Wade Watts.

Wade takes an autocab to a store to buy special civilian clothing "wired for OASIS use." He buys a gun and ammo from a vending machine. He goes into a public OASIS parlor to log in and upload his flash-drive data to his account. He contacts major news outlets to report IOI is after him and his fellow gunters, attaching footage of Daito's murder and Sorrento's memos as proof. He logs in to the Basement chat room, where Aech, Art3mis, and Shoto are waiting for him.

Escape from IOI headquarters proves easy for Wade. With his hacking finesse, no challenge is too great for him; in a world that runs completely on computers, he has godlike powers. His cleverness and quick mind enable him to reformulate plans when new obstacles appear. Perhaps because of his extensive experience with video games and virtual reality, he is able to approach the real-life, high-stakes challenge of infiltrating, hacking, and escaping IOI smoothly and calmly. Although he knows getting caught will mean either death or torturous lifelong imprisonment, he takes his chances in the name of a higher cause.
