Summary

Art3mis, Shoto, Parzival, and Aech are stunned by Ogden Morrow's sudden appearance in the encrypted chat room. Morrow explains he has unlimited powers of access within the OASIS and says it was he who previously knocked over a stack of books in the Basement. He wants to help the gunters because he promised Halliday he "would do everything [he] could to protect the spirit and integrity of his contest." He has made arrangements to transport them all to his house in Oregon. Aech and Wade are to meet up and ride to the airport together.

Wade is nervous to meet Aech in real life but not as nervous as he is to meet Art3mis. When he enters Aech's RV, he realizes his friend is "a heavyset African American girl." He is upset and disoriented at first because she is so different from her avatar—a white male—but the two quickly establish a rhythm of camaraderie in person after Aech points out the OASIS is an equalizing force for people of color and other minorities; they can craft any appearance for their avatar, thus removing traditional barriers to success. On the plane, Aech, whose real name is Helen Harris, tells Wade her life story. She reveals her mother kicked her out when she came out as gay when she was 18.

When they arrive at Morrow's mansion in the Oregon mountains, Art3mis and Shoto have already arrived, but the four will not meet in person until after the upcoming challenge. When Wade asks Morrow why his friendship with Halliday ended, Morrow says Halliday was in love with Morrow's wife, Kira. Wade and Aech log in to the OASIS.

Analysis

The four gunters are shocked and starstruck to realize Morrow has been eavesdropping on them. He wants to help them—not because he is emotionally invested in the contest but because of a promise he made to Halliday on his deathbed. Shortly after the OASIS was released, the previously extroverted and business-minded Morrow and his wife escaped into seclusion in the mountains. He has become even more isolated since her tragic death, but he seems to prefer this lifestyle.

Wade is also shocked to discover Aech's real identity. At first he feels deceived and embarrassed about Aech's gender, which doesn't match her avatar. For Aech and her mother, who ran a business as a white male avatar, personal transformation via the OASIS is important both politically and economically.

Wade is exceedingly nervous and excited to meet Art3mis, but she is still determined to focus only on the quest and refuses to meet him until after it ends. In his immersion rig at Morrow's, Wade is closer to her in real life than he has ever been, yet she remains hidden under two layers, veiled within her rig bay and her avatar.
