Father The Father is one of the six Characters. He is a 50-year-old man dressed in black and white. He and the Stepdaughter are the two fully "alive" Characters who speak the most. His dominant character trait is remorse. Read More
Stepdaughter The Stepdaughter is one of the six Characters. She is an 18-year-old woman dressed in elegant black mourning clothes. She and the Father are the two fully "alive" Characters who speak the most. Her dominant character trait is a desire for revenge. Read More
Mother The Mother is one of the six Characters. She is an older woman dressed in black mourning clothes and a widow's veil. Her dominant character trait is grief. Read More
Son The Son is one of the six Characters. He is a 22-year-old man in a mauve coat and green scarf. He doesn't want to be on the stage or to associate with the other Characters. His dominant character trait is disdain. Read More
Boy The Boy is one of the six Characters. He is 14 and dressed in black. He remains silent throughout the play but has an important role in the final act. Read More
Little Girl The Little Girl is one of the six Characters. She is four and wears a white dress with a black sash. She remains silent throughout the play. Read More
Director The Director is the head of the theater company rehearsing on the stage. He wears a bowler hat (also known as a derby) and smokes a cigar. The Characters convince him to direct their scenes. At first he is reluctant, but he becomes increasingly invested in their story. Read More
Director's Secretary The Director's Secretary hands him his mail at the beginning of Act 1.
Doorkeeper The Doorkeeper lets the Characters into the theater.
Electrician The Electrician handles the lighting on the stage.
Foreman The Foreman builds the set. He is alone onstage working at the beginning of Act 1. He drops the curtain at the end of Act 2 against the Director's wishes.
Ingenue The Ingenue (L'Ingénue) is a young actress in the theater company.
Juvenile Lead The Juvenile Lead is a young man in the theater company. He is assigned the role of the Son.
Leading Lady The Leading Lady is the head actress in the theater company. She is proud and pompous. She wears white and carries a small dog. When the Actors recreate the Characters' scene in Act 2, she plays the Stepdaughter.
Leading Man The Leading Man is the head actor in the theater company. He plays the Father in Act 2 when the Actors recreate the Characters' scene.
Madame Pace Madame Pace is the owner of a sewing shop and brothel. She employs the Mother and Stepdaughter. She's a large woman in a carrot-colored wig and red dress. She appears during Act 2. Although Madame Pace is a Character, she doesn't enter or exit with the six other Characters.
Prompter The Prompter has an important job to hold a copy of the script and reminds cast members of their lines. He makes notes of the Father and Stepdaughter's lines during their scene in Act 2.
Property Man The Property Man handles props for the theater.
Second Female Lead The Second Female Lead is an actress in the theater company. She is assigned the role of the Mother.
Stage Crew The Stage Crew is made up of several unnamed stagehands who assist with the technical aspects of the production.
Stage Manager The Stage Manager helps the Director handle the technical aspects of the production. He is onstage briefly in Act 1.
