David Guterson was born on May 4, 1956, in Seattle, Washington. His father was a well-known criminal defense lawyer. Guterson was not a strong student in high school but eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature and a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Washington. He taught high school English for 10 years before his first novel, Snow Falling on Cedars, was published.

Snow Falling on Cedars was a critical and popular success. In 1995 Guterson received the PEN/Faulkner Award for it—one of the highest literary awards presented in the United States. The book has also sold more than 4 million copies. Guterson was praised for his descriptions of the Pacific Northwest and life in the Japanese internment camps that were set up during World War II. Guterson said he wanted to write a moral novel that addressed issues about race and prejudice. His deep affection for Bainbridge Island inspired him to write a book set in the novel's location, San Piedro Island. The combination of the setting, its history, and his father's time as a criminal defense attorney helped inspire Snow Falling on Cedars.

After the success of Snow Falling on Cedars,Guterson stopped teaching to write full time and went on to write four other novels, a short story collection, a poetry collection, and a book about homeschooling.
