By its full title, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order is a best-selling work by Samuel P. Huntington. The book, first published after the collapse of the Soviet Union, examines and anticipates ways in which civilizations will realign in a new world order. Huntington's theories have been both embraced and denounced. However, they offer an in-depth analysis of global politics and the ways in which civilizational identities drive current global conflicts and alliances. The book is considered by many to be essential to understanding how American foreign policy is shaped.
The phrase Clash of Civilizations was popularized by the French philosopher Albert Camus, who used it in a 1946 interview. Discussing the French colonization of Algeria, he said, "This will not be a clash of empires; we are witnessing the clash of civilizations." In Huntington's book, the phrase refers to his idea that the civilizations of the world are coming into increasing conflict because of clashing cultural and religious identities. The rest of the title, and the Remaking of the World Order, expands on Huntington's belief that this clash points to a restructuring of the world's most powerful civilizations as they compete for cultural influence and economic power.
