The main characters in The Comedy of Errors are identical twins, constantly mistaken for one another. As these "errors" multiply, the residents of Ephesus—including the local merchants and the legal authorities—are drawn into the confusion as well. In modern English the phrase comedy of errors refers to any amusing situation resulting from a mistake or misunderstanding.
