Ernest

Ernest is a man who has strong convictions about art, aesthetics, and art criticism. Ernest is persistent and eager and tries in vain to impress Gilbert with his pronouncements about art. Gilbert contradicts everything that Ernest says but Ernest keeps trying to come up with some point about art that Gilbert will agree with. Ernest is confident in his convictions but is inevitably swayed by Gilbert's arguments.

Gilbert

Gilbert is a man with many opinions about art, aesthetics, and art criticism and he is certain that he's right. Gilbert listens to Ernest's opinions about art and art criticism but it is only so that he can tell Ernest how wrong he is. Gilbert uses Ernest's opinions as a springboard to launch into his own monologues.
