In Greek mythology, a Cyclops is a member of a race of one-eyed giants. According to Greek poet Homer (9th–8th century BCE), the Cyclopes lived on the island of what is traditionally understood to be Sicily—part of modern Italy. The play dramatizes an encounter between Greek mythological war hero Odysseus and a deadly Cyclops.
