The Diary of Samuel Pepys is an abridged account of the experiences and life of Londoner Samuel Pepys (1633–1703). The diary spans about eight years, from January 1, 1660 to May 31, 1669. Pepys's diary describes the English Restoration, when Charles II (1630–85) returned after a 10-year exile to take the throne. The diary offers a first-person account of important English historical events, including a deadly epidemic in 1665, the Great London Fire in 1666, and an ongoing war with the Dutch. The diary also provides a look at English daily life in the late 1600s.
As a memoir, the diary is narrated in the first person by London resident Samuel Pepys.
The Diary of Samuel Pepys expresses the ideas, activities, and experiences of Samuel Pepys, a 17th-century British navy administrator.
