Tom wakes up, and Anna throws the phone down by the tracks. When Tom joins her in the backyard, she claims she is out there because she heard something. Tom takes her inside the house and wants to make love.
So far the reader has tried to figure out what happened to Megan in the past, but now the reader begins to worry about what might happen to Anna and Rachel in the future. The reader assumes that Tom killed Megan, Rachel assumes it, and likely so does Anna. After all, she does not confront him about the messages she heard on the phone. But now that Anna has thrown away the phone, they're unable to prove it.
