Angie Thomas
2017
Novel
Drama
The story is narrated by the main character, Starr Carter, in the first person.
The novel The Hate U Give is written in the present tense.
Author Angie Thomas took the title The Hate U Give from a quote by rapper Tupac Shakur (1971–96). The complete quote is "The Hate U Give Little Infants F**** Everybody." This was Shakur's way of saying that institutionalized racism disproportionally affects minorities. The letters of each word in the quote add up to T-H-U-G L-I-F-E. As Maverick Carter explains in the book, Thug Life is "a system designed against [African Americans]."
