The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | Chapter 33 | Summary

Suddenly, the shooting stops. The silence is broken only by a couple of strangled gurgles and thuds. The huddled foursome wait and then wait some more, until Ford Prefect finally ventures out to have a look. The two cops are lying in crumpled heaps on the ground. A closer look reveals that their life-support systems failed simultaneously for some highly improbable reason.

Zaphod Beeblebrox is not interested in figuring out how it happened, but on getting away. Grabbing one of the Kill-O-Zap guns, he dashes into the corridor and nearly blasts the aircar that is waiting there. Arthur Dent recognizes it as belonging to Slartibartfast. Pinned to the instrument panel is a note from the old man, saying, "This is probably the best button to press." A drawn arrow points to one of the controls.

By now, it is not surprising that another improbable and mysterious event has saved the foursome from death. Something has blown up both cops' life-support system computers and caused the backup links to their ship's main computer to fail. It is an astonishing coincidence.

By further coincidence, Slartibartfast apparently guesses that the foursome will escape and leaves an aircar conveniently parked outside. The elderly Magrathean may seem quiet and unassuming, but he takes artistic pride in his work, and the mice have antagonized him by curtly canceling their order of Earth Mark Two. This has gained the escaping foursome an unlikely and resourceful ally.
