Power Humility The allure of the dwarvesquest far beyond the Shire is contrasted with the warmth of Bilbos home. The drive for power is balanced by displays of humility, both clear (Bilbo) and subtle (Gandalf). Strong kinship is countered by characters who represent different types of outsiders: Bilbo, Gollum, and Smaug. Comfort Isolation Adventure Community Bilbo is primarily memorable as a hero because he is, on the surface, not all that heroic.
