Colonel Pyncheon Colonel Pyncheon is the patriarch of the family who took the land from Matthew Maule after accusing him of witchcraft; he is cursed by Matthew Maule and dies on the very day he inaugurates the House of the Seven Gables.
Gervayse Pyncheon Gervayse Pyncheon is the grandson of Colonel Pyncheon; he calls Matthew Maule (the younger) to the House of the Seven Gables because he believes he knows where the deed to the land in Maine is hidden.
Uncle Jaffrey Pyncheon Uncle Jaffrey Pyncheon was a wealthy bachelor whose death was blamed on Clifford Pyncheon and whose wealth is passed down to Judge Pyncheon.
Scipio Scipio is Gervayse Pyncheon's slave and servant.
The shopkeeper The shopkeeper is a Pyncheon who lived a few generations before Hepzibah and Clifford; he opened up a shop in the House of the Seven Gables, which was closed after he died until Hepzibah reopened it.
Two workmen The two workmen walk down Pyncheon Street and comment on the status of Hepzibah and her store.
Uncle Venner Uncle Venner is a very old man who lives close to the House of the Seven Gables and is friendly with Hepzibah and Clifford.
