Isabel Allende

Novel
Drama
The House of the Spirits features an omniscient third-person narrator. However, periodically the narration is interrupted by the voice of the main male character, Esteban Trueba, who narrates events from his point of view.
The House of the Spirits is told in past tense, although when Esteban Trueba takes over as narrator, he speaks in the present tense.
The House of the Spirits mostly takes place in the "big house on the corner"—a house filled with spirits. In addition, each year the household moves to the Trueba country estate. So the house of the spirits extends beyond a physical dwelling to wherever in space and time the family goes.
