continuity: the continuation of a visual line, either made from a single continuous material such as sidewalks or a series of pieces that create a visual line such as rows of houses

clarity of joint: visible and prominent seams or points of intersection such as road intersections used as visual points of reference

directional differentiation: a distinction or variable that changes between two locations within a city such as elevation, asymmetry, or radial differences

dominance: the characteristic of a part that is larger or more prominent than another part

form simplicity: geometrical regularity of an image or symbol

imagability: the ease with which people can create a mental image of a city

legibility: the ease with which people can discern the patterns and landmarks of a city

mental map: the map people create inside their heads based on their experiences and memory of a city

motion awareness: characteristics that aid travelers to understand the directions they could potentially travel

singularity: a feature that is unique or distinctive

time series: characteristics of a city that suggest the passage of time or that elements ebb and flow with the passing of time

visual scope: characteristics that may be practical or symbolic that increase the amount of a city that is visible from a single viewpoint

wayfinding: the process of planning and following a route based on a person's starting position
