An omniscient, unnamed narrator tells the story of "The Jolly Corner."
The narrator uses the past tense.
Henry James's acute sense of verbal irony is operative in the title. The jolly corner is the location of the childhood home of the protagonist, Spencer Brydon. Brydon does not describe his childhood as being jolly. In fact, it seems the opposite. Brydon describes his childhood home as being "almost in the teeth of my father's curse." Many of his family members have lived and died in the mansion. It is now an empty shell.
