The Magna Carta | Section 43 | Summary

Share
Share

Summary

This section concerns the death of a tenant on an escheat (property reverted to the possession of the king). His heir will not have to pay any more money or give any more service to the king than he would have had to give to the baron—that is, if the baron had still been in charge of it.

Analysis

Some tenants held lands given to them directly by the king. Others held lands originally granted by a baron. This section specifically applies to the latter type of tenants. It assures them that King John would only take from them the payments they had paid to the baron. He will not seize the land outright for himself.
