The narrator does little more than observe and think throughout the entire story. Her only interaction with someone comes at the end of the story, and so her thoughts and observations reveal her personality to the reader through stream of consciousness. Although all her thoughts arise out of the observation of a simple mark upon the wall, she provides insights on issues of gender, war, knowledge, and memory.
