The nameless luggage-store proprietor hears about war on Earth, but it does not feel real to him because it is too far away. He predicts his luggage business will boom because people will want to go back to Earth to be with the families they left behind. Father Peregrine agrees and buys a suitcase from him.
Humans do not have enough history on Mars for them to stay when global war breaks out on Earth. Despite the politics, prejudice, and laws they tried to escape from, those things followed them and Earth is still home. They feel a responsibility to return and help out.
When Father Peregrine compares war on Earth to war in China when he was a boy, he brings up the idea of physical distance creating an emotional and intellectual distance. If one cannot hear the explosions, reports of the war seem unbelievable. It may be humans return to Earth for the war because they need to experience it for themselves to believe it.
