The Misanthrope | Act 2, Scene 4 | Summary

Share
Share

Summary

The valet Basque reappears, this time to announce the arrival of Clitandre, another young nobleman from the court. Alceste, irritated beyond measure, announces his own departure. Célimène urges him to remain, in vain.

Analysis

This scene amusingly, but only partially, mirrors Scene 2. Like Scene 2, it runs in seamlessly from the preceding scene. But now, instead of merely registering his objection, Alceste declares his intention to leave, so aggravated is he over Célimène's willingness to receive young gentleman visitors. Amusingly, Alceste undercuts his own ultimatum at the start of the following scene.
