The Misanthrope | Act 5, Scene 3 | Summary

Share
Share

Summary

Célimène briefly describes her predicament to Éliante and asks her cousin's advice. Éliante replies that her advice will be of little use, because she favors all those who speak their mind frankly. Both Oronte and Alceste tell Célimène that she is now compelled to declare her position.

Analysis

In this brief scene, Éliante deals Célimène a setback, because she comes out on the side of frankness and openness. Both Alceste and Oronte now zealously pursue what must appear to them as an advantage in their competition.
