The Misanthrope | Act 5, Scene 5 | Summary

Summary

Furious and resentful, Oronte denounces Célimène for her betrayal. As he departs, he tells Alceste that he (Oronte) will no longer stand between Alceste and Célimène.

Analysis

On several previous occasions, Oronte's inflated ego has been on display, so it is no surprise that he arrogantly tells Célimène that the loss of his heart will be her "punishment" and not his. He goes on his own way.
