Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus is often offered eternal life (by the nymphs and at other moments in the text). Why do you think he choose mortal life, given that the Greeks, like the Sumerians, considered the afterlife very miserable? Culturally, what's the value in having an afterlife that is basically forgetfulness and longing, as it was for the Greeks, even for those who are good?
