Timeline of Events

  • One morning, mid-1900s

    A scorpion stings Coyotito, and his parents Juana and Kino take him to the doctor.

  • Shortly thereafter

    The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito because his parents cannot pay.

  • Midday

    After Juana prays, Kino finds a pearl to pay the doctor, the Pearl of the World.

  • At the same time

    Coyotito seems to have recovered from the scorpion sting.

  • Immediately thereafter

    News of Kino's pearl travels through the town, arousing desire and greed in the townspeople.

    Kino says the pearl will free them all by allowing Coyotito to become educated and literate.

    The doctor comes to Kino's house and treats Coyotito. Kino is suspicious the treatment is a sham.
