A scorpion stings Coyotito, and his parents Juana and Kino take him to the doctor.
Chapter 1News of Kino's pearl travels through the town, arousing desire and greed in the townspeople.
Chapter 3Kino says the pearl will free them all by allowing Coyotito to become educated and literate.
Chapter 3The doctor comes to Kino's house and treats Coyotito. Kino is suspicious the treatment is a sham.
Chapter 3Kino buries the pearl. He awakens to fight off a would-be robber with his knife.
Chapter 3Juana begs Kino to throw away the evil pearl, but he refuses, saying the pearl is their only chance.
Chapter 3Kino says he will sell his pearl in the capital after the local buyers attempt to cheat him.
Chapter 4Kino is injured fighting off another intruder. He refuses Juana's plea to get rid of the pearl.
Chapter 4Kino kills a man who attacks him on the beach. His house and canoe are destroyed.
Chapter 5Kino and Juana set out on foot for Loreto in the north, where they hope to be safe.
Chapter 6Hiding by the side of the road, Kino realizes three men are tracking him and intend to kill him.
Chapter 6The three trackers arrive at the spring near where Kino and Juana are hiding.
Chapter 6Hearing Coyotito's crying, a tracker shoots him dead. Kino kills the trackers and takes their gun.
Chapter 6Kino and Juana return to La Paz with Coyotito's body. Kino flings the pearl into the sea.
