About the Title

The title Translations refers specifically to the character Owen's job—he translates Irish into English for the British military officers who are mapping an area in Donegal, Ireland, and renames the Irish place names in English. The term translations also refers more broadly to a shift from old traditions to new ones, the aggressive political and cultural act of forcing speakers of one language to adopt another, and the adaptation of ancient languages and ideas to modern purposes. The play further examines the lack of translation needed when it comes to universal emotions such as love.
