Tommo Tommo (Tom), as the islanders call him, is the narrator. He is an adventurous sailor who would rather risk encountering islanders than stay aboard the ship with his cruel captain. Read More
Toby Toby is a young sailor who befriends Tommo. He is a courageous and quiet man who doesn't express his emotions freely. Read More
Mehevi Mehevi is one of the leaders of the Typee. He appears strong and well respected, but also has a friendly manner. Read More
Fayaway Fayaway is a beautiful young woman of the tribe. She is innocent and charming, and lives with Kory-Kory's family. Read More
Kory-Kory Kory-Kory is a Typee man who lives with his mother, father, and extended family. He is heavily tattooed and very friendly. Read More
Karakoee Karakoee is an islander from Oahu who comes to rescue Tommo. He is a tall, brave man who wears a green shooting-jacket.
Marheyo Marheyo is the father of Kory-Kory. It is his hut that Tommo and Toby stay in, and he seems to have strong sympathy for Tommo's situation.
Marnoo Marnoo is an islander from another tribe who is considered "taboo," and is therefore allowed to move freely around the island without being attacked. He has dark curly hair and speaks broken English.
Mow-Mow Mow-Mow is a fierce, warlike leader of the Typee. His demeanor contrasts with the other characters, who seem generally more peaceful and friendly.
Rear Admiral Du Petit Thouars The rear admiral leads the French naval expedition that claims Nukuheva for the French. He is described as a self-important, sometimes violent, man with little regard for the native people of the islands.
Tinor Tinor is the wife of Marheyo and mother of Kory-Kory. She is very industrious and is constantly on the go.
Captain Vang The captain of the ship Dolly, Captain Vang is a cruel overbearing man who abuses his sailors. He has no mercy and doesn't care about the welfare of his men.
