abductor

any muscle whose contraction moves a body part, such as a limb, away from the body's midline or away from another body part

adductor

any muscle whose contraction moves a body part, such as a limb, toward the body's midline or toward another body part

antagonist

muscle that works by opposing the movement of the prime mover, slowing it down

buccinator

muscle that forms the cheek and through compression and contraction contributes to sucking, blowing, and chewing

depressor

any muscle whose contraction lowers the body part to which the muscle is attached

extensor

any muscle whose contraction straightens or extends a body part by increasing the angle between the sides of a joint

flexor

any muscle whose contraction bends a body part by decreasing the angle between bones on two sides of a joint

muscle that produces most of the force to accomplish a specific movement

pronator

muscle that rotates the arm so that the palm faces downward or toward the back

supinator

muscle responsible for rotating the forearm so that the palm faces upward or toward the front
