Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

IS310 is mandatory as is it a gateway course into the IS program at UMBC. This is a hardware course and the only one you will take in the IS program. The course covers concepts related to computer systems with emphasis on the relationships between hardware architecture, system software and applications software. The architecture of processors and storage systems are explored. It is a somewhat difficult course and having some preexisting knowledge of the computer hardware would be very advantageous for students upon starting the class.

    Course highlights:

Some of the highlights from the course is not only learning how clicking a letter on a keyboard shows up on the computer monitor and how a CPU uses surrounding hardware components to complete a task, but how touch screens are able to process user input and the minute differences of operating systems within a Mac and PC make one computer more efficient than the other. In this class, you learn how the most up-to-date and relevant technology is developed and used and future trends of specific hardware components in devices such as smartphones and optical discs.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

First and foremost, please read the textbook chapters more than once. In the Systems Architecture textbook, some chapters have more content and vocabulary to learn and be applied. For example, chapter 7 and 8 heavily covers many vocabulary words relating to computer video and audio display. I highly suggest going to office hours to receive different perspective of the material from the instructor, so that your understanding is enhanced.
