Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Kraus was extremely effective in executing the material so everyone in the lecture understood what was occurring. She gave multiple quizzes and homeworks which she graded. The content of the quizzes influenced the midterm and final exams. Also due to their being so much content, the final exam was not cumulative.

    Course highlights:

I learned the processes of transcription, translation, and replication for both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

If you have having any trouble go to her office hours because she takes the time to explain in depth what you are having understanding.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This course is very tough and rigorous. There were quizzes everyday in the lecture and the lab required students to work independently outside of lab to complete the FLY Project which consisted of taking care of, breeding, counting, and recording data on the fly crosses that had been conducted to determine hereditary patterns. The course gave me an in depth understanding of how genetics play a role in all aspects of human life including personalities and mental disorders. The grading was understandably hard because of the expectations for Lab Reports and the presentation of the fly project.

    Course highlights:

The highlights were definitely working with all of the flies and breeding them. I learned how to safely handle specimen and how to dispose of them properly. It was fascinating to watch the flies under a microscope as they woke up from the fly nap and stumbled across the note cards.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Be prepared to live in the lab, expect the fly crosses to fail at least once, and do not get upset when you fly vial turns out to have mites or all the flies die overnight and you must restart with only three weeks left of the semester.
