Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Bio 13 is a rigorous, introductory course in Biology that focuses on molecular biology. Topics that were covered include Cellular processes, protein structure, DNA structure, genetics, and other macromolecules. Some background knowledge of biological concepts such as evolution and genetics would be very helpful to have but are not necessary to succeed in this course.

    Course highlights:

The most interesting part of this course for me was not just learning about various cellular processes, but also how those cellular processes could go wrong and what types of effects this has on living organisms and people. For example, I not only learned what types of genetic mutations can cause Cystic Fibrosis, but also how those mutations interrupt cellular process to cause the disease.

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

Succeeding in this course takes significant prep time outside of class through keeping up with the assigned readings, but learning the material is well worth the commitment. Even if you are not interested in continuing to study biology, this is a class that you should take to understand fundamental biological concepts.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I highly recommend this class because Dr. Koegel is an amazing professor. She truly cares about each and every student, and will remember your name even if you only came to one office hour session. She takes plenty of time and thought to explain difficult concepts and is incredibly patient when additional explanation is needed.

    Course highlights:

Dr. Koegel was definitely the highlight of this class because she was so kind, helpful, and thoughtful. I learned quite a bit about the replication of DNA, which was fascinating.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Make sure you keep up with your studying and organize your notes. The material is not too difficult; however, the test questions can easily trip you up. Definitely take as many practice tests as you can so that you can get a feel for what the questions are asking you.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Loved it. It was definitely challenging, but never so much so that you could not do well on the exams if you properly understood and could apply all of the concepts learned in class. The professor was great at explaining complex concepts in simple terms and emphasizing what was and was not important to know.

    Course highlights:

Highlights of this course were learning all of the microbiology to form the big picture of how and why living things around us are the way they are.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Study hard for exams and make sure to not just memorize and know the material, but to be able to actually apply it in new ways.
