Not too easy. Not too difficult.
Southwest is the social capitol of Umass Amherst. This is where awesome outside school-promoted events happen (Cookouts, Snowboard Challenge, Talent Shows, Basketball Games), and also where the crazy things happen.
For a more academic atmosphere, northeast is the way to go. If you're looking for somewhat of a mix, Central and O. Hill. The best place to live, though, is the Commonwealth Honors College. It has the best location on campus and by far the nicest living arrangements.

Advice for students:
Downtown Amherst is very close and has a variety of places to eat, as well as two other schools in the same general area. It's easy to get the Northhampton, too, where there's a street that might as well be a shopping center.
