Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

This course provides exposure to different music and cultures. It allows for a broader understanding of different societal traditions and the history of the music they listen to. Not only that, but it opens your mind to listening to new and different music that you would not have previously listened to or even heard of.

    Course highlights:

I learned about music traditions and genres from multiple different cultures including Hawaii, Asia, Spain, and the middle east. I learned about the different instruments used and what festivals and musical traditions the instruments are used in. I learned that each culture has a different musical history and reasoning for the music that they listen to. I learned how to distinguish between different instruments, musical techniques, and singing. Overall, I expanded my musical knowledge and learned to appreciate music even more than I already had.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Do NOT underestimate your need to distinguish between different songs. Dr. Pinkert especially likes to put songs on the exams that you have to listen to and then name. Spend time learning the different instrumental sounds and vocal techniques because you will have to identify them. Spend time studying the history and background to the music genre's. You WILL be asked about things like why and how the music became popular. Also make sure you practice listening to the different songs because she will play songs that very similar. Overall it's not a hard course if you pay attention, go to class and take notes(because she does not post the lecture slides online), and study.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The course load was very light (three exams and two papers), but you need to study for the exams as she looks for exact wording from the class notes in her answers.

    Course highlights:

The music selection for this course is actually very interesting. She spends a great deal of time focusing on the cultural aspects behind the music, rather than simple the songs themselves. This allows students to analyze the development of these music styles, and see how they influence other styles across the globe.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Go to lecture and take notes on what the professor talks about, regardless of whether or not it is on the PowerPoint slides, because these are often questions on the test.
