    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

Deshong is so funny but so helpful, really makes sure you know the material and does what he can to help you.

    Course highlights:

A lot of his examples are real life problems relating to orgo (he taught us how the body breaks down alcohol!)

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

make charts to separate the material, go to discussion and office hours if needed, study with friends!

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I recommend this course because contrary to belief, organic chemistry can be mastered with various and successful study techniques. I happened to practice the problems in the notes repeatedly as well as those in the discussion sections so that I could understand why and how mechanisms worked. Memorizing is only helpful in the short term albeit there are some subjects that are required to be memorized such as pka values, IR, and NMR among other subjects. The course is also quite interesting especially because the professor is knowledgeable about the subject and its history.

    Course highlights:

The highlights of this course was understanding the workings of biochemical reactions in regards to organic molecules and mechanisms. Some of the biological agents we were introduced to in organic mechanisms included NADPH/ NADH, nature's biological reducing reagent, among others. I also thoroughly enjoyed understanding the workings of long mechanisms. I learned many of organic chemistry's most brutal mechanisms and its most simplest as well as biological ones.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Don't waste your time on resources that don't help. If practicing helps you, then follow through and prioritize it. Attend all discussions and try to use the GSS resources because it forces you to at least to look at and practice the problems discussed in the notes. Reinforcement is key for this course. Do all worksheets and discussion assignments especially before each exam and the final. Practice, practice, practice. Organic chemistry is not considered a science course in terms of memorizing. It's a separate language. Personally, it's more comparable to math than an anatomy because it relies more on understanding mechanisms rather than memorizing them. Don't skip discussions and DO NOT skip class.
