Not too easy. Not too difficult.

Professors Always Available – I am a student in the Political Science department.

    Course highlights:

I find that all my professors are engaging and always available outside of class. They are very supportive and helpful in all aspects.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Kalamazoo has an amazing study abroad program. 85% of the students study abroad their sophomore or junior year. We have 3, 6, and 9 month programs six different continents around the world!

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend this course because it really makes the student work hard and it puts a lot of pressure on them to change their habits to fit a very difficult college level course. The student will have to change the way they manage their time, how they study, and how they learn in general. Also, it facilitates bonds between people because you're largely in the lab by yourself. The professor isn't guiding you the whole way through like earlier Chemistry classes. I learned how to communicate with and learn from my peers and the friendships that I found in that class are strong because they were formed under a lot of pressure and a lot of complaining, but together.

    Course highlights:

My problem solving skills got much better in this class because towards the end of it, everything starts coming together as pieces of a giant puzzle. Learning is one thing. Actually applying those things to the complex problems given to you is much harder. One of the highlights of this course was seeing Chemistry and Biology interact with each other. Another one was gaining more confidence in my scientific writing and learning how to work with new scientific instruments each week in lab and watching all of that knowledge compound throughout the class.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

To succeed in Orgo I, you have to be ready to fall down a lot and you have to be ready to work very hard to get back up. Excluding Orgo II, this was the hardest class that I have taken so far, going into my Junior year. A student in this class will most likely see grades lower than they've ever seen before on their exams, but it's possible to get their grade back up. When in this class, you have to put a lot of time in and you have to know how to ask for help from the professor, TA, and your fellow peers. Oh, and get a model kit and solutions manual or know someone who has one. Seriously, they're worth it.
