Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

The professor is really interested in his subject and his students. He explains really well and teaches a lot. He's really dedicated to his job, trying to make his class more fun with nerdy jokes, even though sometimes only he thinks they are funny. Only problems are that he goes too fast paced sometimes and may not always explain the answer to your questions clearly. But for that last problem, if you ask him to clarify again or ask him through an email, you are sure to get a good explanation anyways.

    Course highlights:

You learn a little bit of everything, getting a good base set for studying the core areas of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. He makes a lot of assignments that make you use that knowledge and practice it, which I really find awesome.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Just be sure to review and read before a class or after it if you think it was too fast paced, and if you still don't understand everything, just ask. The teacher is really approachable and he doesn't mind explaining everything to you and answering all your questions.

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Granted, linguistics is not for everyone, but this is the course that introduced me to linguistics and got me so interested in it, that I majored in it at Truman and am now pursuing a masters in it.

    Course highlights:

The lectures are very interesting; I especially enjoyed the lectures about signed languages. One of the most fun things we did was when some of Shapiro's "Language and the Mind" students came to the class and performed some studies on us.

    Hours per week:

    6-8 hours

    Advice for students:

Some students just have to take this course for their major and don't really want to. My advice is, whether you want to take it or not, if you have to take it, and Shapiro is teaching a section, take it with Shapiro!

Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would highly recommend this course. It was very interesting and the professor was very engaging.

    Course highlights:

I gained an understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet, which was something totally new for me. We also covered the basics of Linguistics.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

Read the book and show up for the lectures. Also really memorize and try when learning the IPA chart.
