    Term:

    Actin-Myosin Cross Bridge Cycle

    Definition:

    1. Intracellular levels of calcium ions increase; calcium attaches to C subunit of troponin. 2. Troponin changes shape and pulls tropomyosin off of actin binding site. 3. Myosin head binds to actin 4. Inorganic phosphate is released into the sarcoplasm 5. Power stroke moves actin past myosin and shortens sarcomere 6. ADP released into sarcoplasm 7. ATP reattaches to myosin causing the actin-myosin complex to dissociate 8. If calcium present, rebinds troponin and the cycle goes again 9. If calcium is absent, troponin will cover the binding sites of actin and physically block cross-bridge formation
