This class was tough.
This is an excellent course for all International Studies students to take as the whole world is now involved in Middle East affairs. This is an especially great course for students wanting to understand more about the Middle East and why current events happen the way they do.
Through this course, I have gained a much greater sense of appreciation for the Middle East as a whole and a greater understanding of why the United States and other international powers relate to the Middle East the way that they do. The course covers all Middle East history from the time of the Prophet to the Arab Spring and provides an analysis of the overall effects of historical events on modern-day happenings. Excellent professor and very well organized class.

Advice for students:
You need to be very organized about participation in this course. It is a lot of reading and quite a bit of writing, so I would definitely recommend taking a writing class before or utilizing the free tutoring Excelsior offers to its students. Professor Katz is also wonderful with reading your papers and returning them to you with comments for improvement if you hand them in ahead of time.
