Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

Dr. Shane made me love writing again. In my high school, I was torn apart and I started associating my grade and my teachers opinions with my ability as a writer. Dr. Shane boosted my confidence and showed me how beautiful my writing could be. He gave me freedom to write. He would give a very broad topic, we would free write what the topic he gave meant to us, and then we would write draft upon draft upon draft. And then I realized how great my writing could have been if I was molded in this way earlier

    Course highlights:

The narrative we got to write first was my favorite part of the course. All he gave us for directions was the word "time". I sat for thirty minutes free writing, trying to find something, anything that made sense of this simple word. I finally came around to an idea about grandfather with Alzheimer's who lost his time, stuck inside a shell of himself, lost and confused, for five years. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever written.

    Hours per week:

    3-5 hours

    Advice for students:

At St. Rose, you have to take this course, but if you need a professor, get Dr. Shane. He is the best. He will work with you if you struggle with writing and he knows exactly how to get you to write what your passionate about. He tends to have you reflect on your writing, which causes your writing to improve just upon reflection. He pours over every word you write to make sure it is everything you are capable of. And even when you don't believe in yourself... he will believe in you.
