    Pretty easy, overall.

    Course Overview:

    Both the class and professor were very interesting. It was a very easy class. There were some long readings, a couple papers, and weekly listening journals. There were no test, just untimed quizzes on the readings. Though it was a class of over a hundred students it felt much smaller because of the set up of the course schedule and Dr. Corso's teaching style. As general education art classes go, this one was probably the best I have taken.

    Course highlights:

    The class material looks at different dance and music styles and practices from all over the world, and how those are influenced by domestic and global events. "Ethnomusicology," which is a combination of musicology and anthropology, is the underlying focus of the class. The students are expected to study and learn how to appreciate music as a social process, which is a very different agenda than any other type of music class. This class expanded my understanding of what music is in a new and interesting way. It also increased my appreciation for music as a part of human society.

    Advice for students:

    Reading the book is necessary to get through the class. Not only are there quizzes on all the reading assignments, but also, citing the book is required in both of the essay assignments. Having some basic music knowledge helps with the listening journals, which were a challenge for some of the students. For those who do not have a basic background of music, there is a class preceptor that helps the students construct the listening journals. The biggest projects are the midterm paper, which analyzes a social setting involving music, and the final paper, which requires the students to attend and analyze a music or dance performance. The papers are both 5-6 pages long which is pretty easy, and Dr. Corso is not a hard grader. However, I would suggest starting early on the papers because it can be difficult to connect your analysis to the class material, as is required for both the papers. The class preceptor is available to help the students make the connection, but having time to work on this more tedious aspect of the paper is what could really make or break your grade.
