This is a fundamental engineering course. Reading the textbook is essential for learning materials.
You can draw connections to some of the real world problems to some materials in this course. You will learn how much about maximum stresses and how a part will fail under pressure etc.

Advice for students:
for any course, the most important tip to do well is to listen to the lecture. Professors tend to give exam problems based on his lectures instead of the book. It can save a lot of your time to understand the material than just by reading the book on your own. If your professor does have a presentation slides or any material, I would say the better way to study for an exam is to focus on those and homework problems.
