Not too easy. Not too difficult.

    Course Overview:

I would recommend taking this course with Karen. She helps her students to think independently about their designs but still give suggestions on how to approve upon your projects.

    Course highlights:

I learned to think outside of the box and take risks. It is a lot of work but you learn so much to help you continue on to the next studios

    Hours per week:

    9-11 hours

    Advice for students:

But time and effort into this course, it is worth it in the long run.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

This course is required to take so my recommendation will not make a difference unless one switches their major. This course was the hardest class that I have ever taken. I worked about 40-50 hours a week in the studio on projects. I would recommend this class because I learned a lot about architecture. I am glad that I took this class in the beginning of my college career because I was able to obtain so much information about architecture and how demanding the major is. From this point forward, I am hoping that the classes will seem easier because of how much experience I now have from this one class. My professor was very blunt and honest with the students which helped us to know what he expected of us. Even though I disagreed with him a lot, I still understand why he made me do things certain ways to such high standards. I would not recommend this class to people that can not handle the honesty or the workload of the professor. Overall, this class was very tough however, I learned a lot from it.

    Course highlights:

This course has helped me to better understand the "why" of people's actions. Dane always told us to make sure we knew why we were doing something instead of just doing something because we "liked it". That answer was never good enough, so we needed actual functional reasons as to why we made certain decisions. I learned how to understand my intuitions and explain them to clients instead of just throwing my opinions at people.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

In order to succeed in this class, students must be willing to give up all of their free time and constantly be in studio. This survey does not even have a button for how many hours a week that we put into this course (the meter only goes up to twelve hours, however I was in studio working for forty to fifty hours a week). In order to succeed in this major, students can not mess around. They must be 100% serious about architecture because there is no time to slack off and not care. They must dedicate everything to this major in order to succeed.

    This class was tough.

    Course Overview:

As architecture students at RWU, we are required to take 6 semesters of Design Studio. It is definitely worth all of the work that must be put in. The professors prompt you by asking questions like "what if...?" to help you make clear design decisions. Many of the professors have different design ideas but all of the classes are able to hear many different opinions on the projects. It is a lot of work but it is an excellent course for architecture students to take.

    Course highlights:

I've learned that my projects do not have to be perfect because they never will be. Last semester, one of my professors told the class that the sailing center that he designed is still not built the way it was designed. There is no way for a newly designed building to be perfect, life is not perfect. Also, we are just starting out. With more experience we will become better at designing as well as conveying our ideas.

    Hours per week:

    12+ hours

    Advice for students:

Manage your time! If there's one thing I've learned form this it's that you need to know how to manage your time in order to get all of your project components done. You also need to spend extra time drawing and testing all of your ideas during each project. There is no way to come out with a decent project without the extra work outside of class.
